What is ICO?
The icon format used for website favicons and Windows icons. Website favicon.ico, Windows app icons.
When to choose PNG to ICO
ICO is mostly used for website icons (favicons) and for Windows application or shortcut icons. Start from a simple, bold PNG logo, because fine details disappear at very small sizes.
Common problems and fixes
- ICO needs a square image. If your PNG is not square, crop it to a square first so the icon is not stretched or distorted.
- A small source image comes out blurry – start from at least a few hundred pixels across, for example 256 x 256.
- Text in the icon is unreadable – icons are often shown at 16 x 16 or 32 x 32 pixels, so use very short text or none.
- The browser still shows the old icon – favicons are cached heavily; clear the cache or rename the file.
Quality tips
A transparent PNG background normally carries over, so the icon can suit both light and dark browser tabs. Check that the outline is visible against both.
