How to make a video smaller
- Choose a video file (MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI or MKV).
- Choose the quality: high, standard or compressed (smallest file).
- Choose the maximum resolution: original, 1080p, 720p or 480p.
- Choose MP4 (H.264 with AAC) or WebM, wait for it to finish and download the result.
Resolution vs quality: what shrinks the file most
File size is driven by the bitrate, and the bitrate depends largely on the resolution and the quality setting. Going from 1080p to 720p needs less data for the same picture, and lower quality removes fine detail. On a phone screen 720p usually looks good enough, which makes it a sensible compromise for messages.
Size limits to keep in mind
- Email attachments are usually limited to about 20–25 MB (Gmail allows up to 25 MB, Outlook services often apply about 20 MB). Attachments grow by roughly a third when encoded for sending, so aim below the limit.
- Telegram allows files up to 2 GB (more with Premium).
- WhatsApp allows documents up to 2 GB, while a file sent as a regular video is compressed again by the app, which can lower its quality.
Privacy and speed
The video is compressed on your device and never uploaded. It can take a while, especially on a phone or with long recordings: the larger the file, the longer it takes. You can cancel at any time.
