Turn a short MP4 clip into an animated GIF – handy for chats, forums and how-to guides. The tool builds an optimised colour palette and limits frame rate and width so the file does not balloon.
Stick to clips of up to about 10 seconds – longer GIFs get very large.

Good to know about GIF
- Files are very large compared with MP4
- Only 256 colours, no sound
What is MP4 (H.264)?
The most universal video format. Web video, social networks, sharing.
What is GIF?
A format for short animated images, supported by every browser and chat app. Short animations, reactions, how-to snippets.
When to choose MP4 to GIF
GIF suits short looping animations: app demos, chat reactions, illustrations for instructions. A GIF has no audio and is much heavier than a video of the same length, so it only fits clips a few seconds long.
Common problems and fixes
- The file is too big – GIF size grows with duration, frame rate and width. This tool caps the frame rate and width, but the best way to cut size is a shorter clip.
- Colours look grainy or banded – GIF allows only 256 colours, so gradients and skin tones suffer. A colour palette is used to limit this, but it cannot be avoided entirely.
- No sound – GIF does not support audio at all.
- A longer video converts slowly – better to trim it first.
Quality tips
Pick a clip with a simple background and bold subjects. If you need longer or smoother motion, it is better to keep MP4 or WebM.
