How image compression works
An image's file size depends on its dimensions (pixel count) and on the compression quality. This tool re-encodes the image at the quality you choose and, optionally, reduces its width, so the file can end up several times smaller.
JPG and WebP compression is lossy: some fine detail is discarded. A quality of 70–85% is usually visually close to the original while cutting the file by 50–80%.
Which quality to choose
- 80–90% – photos you will print or archive.
- 70–80% – websites, email and social media.
- 50–65% – when the smallest size matters most (e.g. thumbnails).
PNG files
PNG is lossless, so a quality slider cannot shrink it. Unless it is a logo or screenshot that needs transparency, the best way to reduce a PNG is to convert it to JPG or WebP.
