- Roughly 25–35% smaller files than JPG
- Supports transparency like PNG
- Faster pages and better Core Web Vitals
Good to know about WEBP
- Some older apps and editors cannot open it
- Not every platform accepts it as a photo upload
What is PNG?
An image format with lossless compression and transparency support. Logos, screenshots, graphics with transparent backgrounds.
What is WebP?
A modern Google image format – smaller files than JPG and PNG. Website images, faster page loads (SEO).
When to choose PNG to WebP
WebP can keep transparency like PNG but usually takes less space. That makes it a good choice for website logos, icons and illustrations with a transparent background. Large screenshots often shrink several times over as well.
Common problems and fixes
- Transparency should be preserved, but check it on a coloured background before uploading to a site.
- Small text or sharp edges look slightly softer – that is typical of lossy compression. Raise the quality slider.
- A program cannot open the WebP – use the PNG, or convert the WebP back to PNG or JPG.
- The result is larger for some reason – very simple graphics with few colours are sometimes smaller as PNG.
Quality tips
For photos a medium to high quality is enough, while logos with thin lines deserve the highest setting. Always keep the original PNG as an archive copy.
