Good to know about PNG
- Photo files are much larger than JPG
- Not the best choice for large web photos
What is WebP?
A modern Google image format – smaller files than JPG and PNG. Website images, faster page loads (SEO).
What is PNG?
An image format with lossless compression and transparency support. Logos, screenshots, graphics with transparent backgrounds.
When to choose WebP to PNG
Use this conversion when you received a WebP image with a transparent background and need to place it in a presentation, a document or an editor that does not support WebP. PNG keeps transparency and preserves every pixel as it was at conversion time, with no extra loss.
Common problems and fixes
- The PNG is much larger than the WebP – entirely normal, because PNG compresses less aggressively, especially for photos.
- The picture did not get sharper – if the WebP was lossy, PNG cannot undo that loss; it only prevents more.
- Animated WebP – only one frame is saved.
- If the file exceeds 100 MB, reduce its dimensions first.
Quality tips
To check that transparency survived, open the result on a coloured background. If you do not need transparency and want a smaller file, JPG is worth considering.
