How to use it

Choose a panel: volume to volume, ingredient (volume to weight) or oven temperature. Enter a number (1.5 or a fraction such as 1 1/2 both work), pick what you are converting from and to, and the result updates instantly. The arrows button swaps the units.

  • Volume: ml, l, teaspoons and tablespoons, US and metric cups, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons.
  • Ingredients: 15 common ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter, honey or cocoa. The density used is shown.
  • Oven: enter °C, °F or gas mark and get the other two, a description and a fan-oven adjustment.

Why a cup is not the same as grams

Cups and spoons measure volume, while grams measure mass. So 1 US cup (236.6 ml) of flour weighs about 125 g, but a cup of sugar weighs about 200 g. The calculation is: grams = volume in ml / 236.588 × grams per cup.

The tool uses typical average values. Flour can compact, and flour scooped straight from the bag weighs more than flour spooned in and levelled off. For precise recipes, especially baking, a kitchen scale is more reliable.

  • 1 US cup ≈ 236.6 ml, 1 tablespoon ≈ 14.8 ml, 1 teaspoon ≈ 4.9 ml.
  • 1 cup of butter ≈ 227 g, honey ≈ 340 g, water ≈ 237 g.
  • The imperial pint (568 ml) is larger than the US pint (473 ml).

Oven temperature

Gas mark is used in the UK and Ireland. In the table, 4 corresponds to 180 °C (350 °F). It is an approximate scale, so for other temperatures the nearest gas mark is shown. Fan ovens usually run about 20 °C lower than the recipe says, although this depends on the oven.
