Why convert to PNG
- No quality loss
- Supports transparent backgrounds
- Ideal for logos, icons and screenshots
Good to know about PNG
- Photo files are much larger than JPG
- Not the best choice for large web photos
What is JPG (JPEG)?
The most widely used photo format, with lossy compression. Photos, email, social media.
What is PNG?
An image format with lossless compression and transparency support. Logos, screenshots, graphics with transparent backgrounds.
When to choose JPG to PNG
JPG loses a little image detail every time it is saved, so if you plan to edit a photo several times, save it as PNG first. From that point further saves lose nothing. PNG is also a good fit for screenshots with text, logos and diagrams, where crisp edges matter more than file size.
Common problems and fixes
- The file grew several times larger – this is normal: PNG does not use JPG-style compression, so photographic PNGs are much heavier.
- The background is not transparent – JPG has no transparency, so the result has a solid background. You will need to make it transparent in an editor.
- Blocky artefacts around text – they were created when the JPG was compressed; PNG will not remove them.
- Files over 100 MB are not accepted – shrink the picture first.
Quality tips
Convert from the original, least re-compressed JPG you have. If you still have the RAW or PNG original, use that rather than a copy that has been forwarded and re-saved many times.
