When to choose WAV to MP3

WAV recordings (a voice recorder, rehearsal takes, an editor's export) take a lot of space. After converting to MP3 the file becomes several times smaller, which makes it easier to email, share or load onto a player.

Common problems and fixes

  • Quality seems poor – raise the bitrate. Speech is fine at 128 kbps, music usually wants 192–320 kbps.
  • You can estimate size roughly: 128 kbps = about 1 MB per minute, 320 kbps = about 2.4 MB per minute.
  • A very short silence may appear at the start or end – typical of MP3 encoding.
  • A big file (up to 500 MB) converts more slowly than in desktop software.

Quality tips

If you will still edit the recording, keep the WAV and make the MP3 only as the last step, because every MP3 re-encode adds loss.
