When to choose FLAC to MP3
FLAC files are high quality but large, and not every phone, car player or older device plays them. Converting to MP3 gives a smaller, widely supported file – handy on the road or when memory is limited.
Common problems and fixes
- Quality depends on bitrate: 128 kbps suits speech, 192 kbps everyday listening, 256–320 kbps when you want to stay close to the original.
- File size: a 320 kbps MP3 takes about 2.4 MB per minute, while the same track as FLAC is often several times more.
- Remember that converting back to FLAC will not improve the sound – MP3 losses cannot be restored.
- A very large album as a single file takes longer to convert.
Tips
Keep the original FLAC and use the MP3 only as a copy for everyday use.
