When to choose M4A to FLAC
This conversion helps when you want your music library in one format, or when a program accepts FLAC but not M4A. FLAC is also handy for intermediate files that you no longer want to compress again with a lossy codec.
Common problems and fixes
- The sound will not be better: M4A is usually lossy (AAC), and FLAC only preserves what remains.
- The file will be several times larger than the M4A.
- If the M4A holds Apple Lossless (ALAC), converting to FLAC is genuinely lossless and worthwhile.
- Protected M4A files cannot be converted.
Tips
Before converting, consider what is inside the M4A: an ALAC file can be turned into FLAC with no quality difference, an AAC file cannot.
