What is WAV?
An uncompressed audio format used in studios and editors. Audio editing, music production, archiving.
When to choose MP3 to WAV
WAV is an uncompressed format accepted without fuss by audio editors, older equipment and some ringtone or presentation tools. If you must load an MP3 into a program that accepts only WAV, this is the right choice.
Common problems and fixes
- The file became very large. Standard 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo WAV takes about 10 MB per minute, while a 128 kbps MP3 takes about 1 MB per minute.
- The sound does not improve – the MP3 losses have already happened; WAV just stops them growing.
- A very long recording (an hour, say) can reach hundreds of megabytes and converts more slowly in a browser than in desktop software.
Tips
If your goal is only to save space or to play on a music player, WAV is unnecessary. It suits editing, and the final version is better saved as MP3 or FLAC.
