M4A often comes from an iPhone voice recorder, Apple apps or downloaded recordings. Apple devices open it, but some Windows programs, older players and email attachments may not cope. MP3 solves that.
Common problems and fixes
- A silent or unreadable result – if the M4A is protected (DRM, bought from some stores), it cannot be converted.
- Quality: 128 kbps is enough for speech recordings; for music choose 192–320 kbps.
- If the M4A is really a video container, the result is only the audio.
- A long lecture or conversation takes longer than in desktop software.
Tips
For a smaller file from a lecture or conversation, 128 kbps is enough: speech stays clear, and an hour of audio weighs about 58 MB.
