What is PNG?
An image format with lossless compression and transparency support. Logos, screenshots, graphics with transparent backgrounds.
What is JPG (JPEG)?
The most widely used photo format, with lossy compression. Photos, email, social media.
When to choose PNG to JPG
A photo or screenshot saved as PNG often weighs several megabytes, while a JPG with the same visual quality can be several times smaller. That helps when emailing, uploading to a site with a size limit, or filling in forms that accept only JPG files.
Common problems and fixes
- The transparent background turned white – JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need another colour, change the background in an editor first.
- Haze around text and thin lines – raise the quality value (less compression) or keep the PNG.
- A logo or diagram looks worse – PNG suits that kind of graphic better than JPG.
- The file is still large – lower the quality slider or reduce the picture dimensions.
Quality tips
For photos, roughly 80–90% quality is usually enough. Below about 60% artefacts generally become visible. For screenshots with small text, choose a higher value.
