What temperature measures
Temperature tells how energetically the particles of a substance move on average. The SI base unit is the kelvin (K), whose zero corresponds to absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature.
Main scales and where they are used
- Celsius (C) – everyday use in Lithuania and most of the world: water freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C at standard pressure.
- Fahrenheit (F) – everyday use in the USA: water freezes at 32 F and boils at 212 F.
- Kelvin (K) – science and engineering; 0 C = 273.15 K.
Common pitfalls
Temperature scales differ not only in step size but also in their zero, so they cannot be converted by multiplying alone. For example, 20 C is not twice as warm as 10 C: 10 C is 50 F, while 20 C is 68 F. The formula is F = C x 1.8 + 32. Differences behave differently: a change of 1 K = 1 C = 1.8 F. Another mistake is writing kelvin with a degree sign: the correct form is 300 K.
