What volume measures
Volume tells how much space a body, liquid or gas takes up. The SI unit is the cubic metre (m3). In daily life the litre is far more common: 1 l = 1 dm3 = 0.001 m3.
Main units and where they are used
- Millilitre (ml) and litre (l) – drinks, medicine and fuel.
- Cubic metre (m3) – water consumption, building materials and freight.
- US gallon (3.785 l), quart, pint and fluid ounce – US recipes and fuel prices.
- Imperial gallon (4.546 l) – the older British system.
Common pitfalls
The biggest confusion is between gallons: the US gallon is about 17% smaller than the imperial one. US and British pints and fluid ounces differ in the same way. Another mistake is treating a measuring cup as an exact unit: cups have different volumes in different countries, so when baking it matters where the recipe comes from. With cubic units the factor must be cubed: 1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3.
