What area measures
Area shows how much surface a shape or plot covers. The SI unit is the square metre (m2). The area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width.
Main units and where they are used
- m2 and cm2 – flats, rooms and flooring.
- Are (100 m2) – in Lithuania often called a sotka, used for land plots.
- Hectare (10,000 m2) – farms, forests and fields; km2 (1,000,000 m2) – cities and countries.
- Square foot (0.092903 m2) and acre (4046.86 m2) – the USA and United Kingdom.
Common pitfalls
The most frequent mistake is using a length factor for area. Although 1 m = 100 cm, 1 m2 = 10,000 cm2, because the factor is squared. Likewise 1 km2 is 1,000,000 m2, not 1000. In property listings the figure may be total or usable area, so check which one is meant before comparing prices. Outside Europe plots are often given in acres, which are about 0.4 hectare.
