1 Meters per Second (m/s) = 3.6 Kilometers per Hour (km/h)
What speed measures
Speed tells how much distance is covered in a given time. The SI unit is metres per second (m/s), although everyday life mostly uses kilometres per hour.
Main units and where they are used
- km/h – road signs and vehicles in Lithuania and across Europe.
- m/s – sport, physics and wind speed in weather forecasts: 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h.
- mph – the USA and United Kingdom: 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h.
- Knot (1.852 km/h) – marine and air navigation.
Common pitfalls
Mph and km/h are confused very often: 100 mph is about 161 km/h, not 100. Knots used at sea and in aviation are not km/h either – a knot is about 1.85 km/h. With Mach numbers (speed relative to the speed of sound), the speed of sound depends on temperature and altitude, so there is no single fixed factor. To turn m/s into km/h you multiply by 3.6, not by 60 as is sometimes done by mistake.
